1. Getting Seeds
You have three options for obtaining cactus seeds:
๐ธ From Your Own Plants
Cross-pollinate two different clones of the same species (or close hybrids). Use a clean paintbrush to transfer pollen from one flower's anthers to another's stigma. Wait 2-6 months for the fruit to ripen.
๐ Trusted Suppliers
The ๐ต Cactus Concession Stand Facebook group is the go-to marketplace for the community โ verified vendors, rare clones, seed packs with provenance tracking, and fair pricing. Many top collectors source through there.
Other specialist vendors: Mesa Garden (New Mexico โ massive Trichocereus selection), Koehres Kakteen (Germany โ European specialists), Precious Cactus (Italy โ excellent for rare species).
๐ค Community Trades
The ๐ต Cactus Concession Stand is the central hub for buying, selling, and trading cactus seed, cuttings, and rare clones. Many growers post fresh seed with full provenance (accession codes like EF15A27/EFC1655).
Other active groups: SOLO CACTUS (Mexico sourcing), Grafting Cacti (technique sharing), Trichocereus Auctions (rare clone auctions).
2. Seed Extraction & Cleaning
Cleaning Process
- Trichocereus fruit: Split open, scoop out the pink/white pulp containing tiny black seeds. Place in a fine sieve and rinse under running water, massaging gently to separate seeds from pulp. Spread on a paper towel and air-dry for 3-5 days.
- Lophophora fruit: Small pink berries. Squeeze onto a plate. The seeds are larger and easier to separate. Rinse and dry.
- Echinocactus fruit: Dry, woolly capsules. Crush open and shake out seeds. No rinsing needed.
3. Sterilization (Optional but Recommended)
Seeds from outdoor plants may carry fungal spores that kill seedlings. Sterilization reduces damping-off (seedling wilt).
- Hydrogen peroxide soak: 3% HโOโ for 10 minutes โ rinse with sterile water
- Hot water treatment: 50ยฐC water for 15-20 minutes (careful โ higher temps kill seeds)
- Fungicide: Light dusting with sulfur powder or copper fungicide
4. Sowing โ The Takeaway Method
The most reliable method for Trichocereus and most cacti is the takeaway tek โ a sealed container that maintains high humidity for the first 6-12 months.
Step-by-Step Sowing
1๏ธโฃ Prepare Container
Use a clear takeaway container or seedling tray with a transparent lid. Clean with 10% bleach solution. Drill 3-4 small drainage holes in the bottom.
2๏ธโฃ Add Substrate
Fill with a sterile mix: 50% fine pumice + 50% coir (or fine sand). Moisten with distilled water โ it should be damp but not wet. Microwave the damp mix for 2 minutes to sterilize, then cool completely.
3๏ธโฃ Sow Seeds
Scatter seeds evenly on the surface. Do not bury them โ cactus seeds need light to germinate. Press gently to ensure contact with the soil. Mist lightly with distilled water.
4๏ธโฃ Seal & Label
Close the lid. Label with species, date, and source code. Place in bright indirect light (no direct sun โ the sealed container will overheat).
Seed Sowing Reference
| Species | Germination Time | Germination Temp | Light | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trichocereus spp. | 5-14 days | 22-28ยฐC | Bright indirect | Very reliable. Some germinate in 48 hours |
| Lophophora spp. | 7-30 days | 24-30ยฐC | Bright indirect | Slower. Keep warm constant |
| Echinocactus spp. | 10-30 days | 22-28ยฐC | Bright indirect | Erratic germination |
| Astrophytum spp. | 5-20 days | 20-25ยฐC | Bright indirect | Sow fresh for best rates |
| Ariocarpus spp. | 10-60 days | 25-30ยฐC | Bright indirect | Very slow. Patience required |
5. Germination Care
First 3 Months
- Humidity: Keep sealed. The lid should be foggy. Open once a week for 10 minutes to exchange air.
- Light: Bright indirect (12-14 hours/day). No direct sun through the sealed container โ it acts as a greenhouse and will cook the seedlings.
- Temperature: 22-28ยฐC constant. A heat mat helps for stubborn species (Lophophora, Ariocarpus).
- Water: Don't water โ the sealed container maintains moisture. If the soil looks dry, mist with distilled water.
Months 3-6
- Start opening the lid more frequently over 2-3 weeks to harden off (acclimate to lower humidity).
- Begin very dilute fertilizer (ยผ strength, high-nitrogen, once a month).
- Seedlings should be 5-15mm tall with visible spines.
6. First Potting (6-12 Months)
When seedlings are large enough to handle (5-10mm), transplant into individual small pots (5cm / 2 inch).
- Soil: Move to a grittier mix โ 60% pumice + 40% coir. No fertilizer for 2 weeks after transplant.
- Water: Let the soil dry between waterings. Reduce humidity gradually.
- Light: Increase to morning sun (1-2 hours). Watch for reddening (sun stress โ cut back).
- Grafting option: At this size, you can micro-graft onto Pereskiopsis for 10x growth rate. See the grafting guide.
7. Growth Timeline
| Stage | Age | Size | Key Care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germination | 0-2 weeks | 0-2mm | Sealed, humidity, indirect light |
| Seedling | 2 weeks - 6 months | 2-15mm | Sealed โ venting, dilute feed |
| Juvenile (first pot) | 6-18 months | 15-50mm | Individual pots, morning sun |
| Established | 18 months - 3 years | 5-30cm | Full sun, 80/20 mix, regular feed |
| Mature | 3-10+ years | 30-300cm+ | Standard care, blooming |
8. Why Graft?
Grafting 6-month-old seedlings onto Pereskiopsis rootstock can turn a 3-year growth timeline into 6 months. The scion grows 5-10x faster on a vigorous rootstock. Once the scion reaches reasonable size, you degraft it onto its own roots or re-graft onto a permanent Trichocereus stock.
